9. The Death Of Ethan Hunt - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

As soon as you put the word "final" into the title of a film in a franchise that has run for as long as Mission: Impossible has, it's hard not to think about a permanent end. Particularly with someone like Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), who has been dicing with death from the very beginning.

The marketing backed this up, really driving home that this was the end of Hunt's story, and with the character himself asking to be trusted "one last time" in the trailer, it was hard not to picture this as the end of Tom Cruise's legendary IMF agent.

Relatively early on in the film, the decision was made to kill off Ving Rhames' Luther, but this didn't mean that Ethan wouldn't suffer the same fate as well. Again, it must have been called the Final Reckoning for a reason, right?

When Hunt was flying through the sky fighting with Gabriel (Esai Morales), and when he soared through the air on a parachute that ultimately set on fire, it seemed as though there could be no way the character would survive. But, there he was after landing, walking across the field like he had just travelled by car rather than falling through the sky.
