2. Tyler Was The Ghost - Presence

Steven Soderbergh's new experimental supernatural thriller-drama Presence pulls off quite the brilliant bait-and-switch in its climax.

Throughout the movie, we're led to believe that the entity observing Chloe (Callina Liang) and her family might be Chloe's late friend Nadia, though the finale serves up one hell of a swerve.

After it's revealed that Nadia didn't die of an overdose but was murdered by teenage serial killer Ryan (West Mulholland), Chloe's brother Tyler (Eddy Maday) manages to prevent the same fate befalling Chloe, by tackling Ryan out of an upstairs window in his house before he can finish the job.

This leaves Tyler dead along with Ryan in an act of self-sacrifice, though in the film's final scene as the family is preparing to move house, Tyler's mother Rebecca (Lucy Liu) sees a reflection of the presence in a mirror, revealing it to have been Tyler all along.

And so, the events of the film are something of a closed loop - Tyler dies at the end, becoming a ghost to whom the conventional laws of time do not apply, allowing him to manifest in the house prior to his own death and wake his physical self up in time to save Chloe, albeit causing his own demise. Trippy.

And saving the most recent film for last, next up we have the new sci-fi horror flick Companion, so if you haven't seen it yet, MAJOR SPOILERS will follow...
