10 Recent Movie Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming

Companion does a fantastic job of hiding a twist in plain sight, by dropping a huge reveal early on which appears to be the twist.

The marketing freely spoiled the movie's beguiling hook, that protagonist Iris (a brilliant Sophie Thatcher) is actually a companion robot belonging to Josh (Jack Quaid). This is wild enough that most surely assumed it was the big revelation around which the rest of the story unfolds.

But a little while later we learn that Iris isn't actually the only companion bot amongst the six central characters. 

We eventually find out that Eli's (Harvey Guillén) almost impossibly handsome boyfriend Patrick (Lukas Gage) is also a companion - albeit one who, unlike Iris, is fully aware of the fact he isn't human.

The Iris reveal means that most of the audience isn't actively trying to sniff out another plot twist, and certainly not that another member of the group might also be a robot. 

The writing, combined with Lukas Gage's tricksy performance in the role, allows this reveal to effortlessly sneak up on the audience.
