Like Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognisable video game characters of all time, and was wildly overdue a great film. After a little wobble when Sonic's look was first released, the franchise now has a trilogy to its name that has grossed over $1 billion altogether.

There has been something of a pattern when it comes to the next film in the series, that each one has introduced at least one new classic character from the games. The post-credit scene from the first movie teased Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey), who was joined by Knuckles (Idris Elba) in Sonic 2, before the sequel itself teased Shadow (Keanu Reeves) for Sonic 3.

Each one of these has been a hit, so naturally, it was exciting to see if Sonic 3 walked the same path. It would have been understandable for the franchise to stop at a trilogy, but there is plenty of life in it yet.

While being attacked by a group of Metal Sonics, the speedster was saved by a mysterious, pink blur, who pulled her hood down to reveal herself as Amy Rose, yet another beloved character from the games. That, and the fact that Shadow was confirmed to have survived, made for a great tease for whatever Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has in store in 2027.
