4. The Kids - Cocaine Bear

Avatar The Way Of Water
Universal

Much like Renfield, Cocaine Bear was a film of two halves - one half an irreverent, R-rated romp in which a coke-huffing bear goes on a rampage, while the other was far too invested in a pair of kids the audience didn't give a damn about.

The central characters among the (human) ensemble cast are Sari (a criminally wasted Keri Russell), her daughter Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince), and Dee Dee's best friend Henry (Christian Convery).

Outside of an admittedly amusing scene where Dee Dee and Henry get high on coke themselves, they're mostly dead weight in the movie because they're so clearly fitted with plot armour - there's never any hint that they could possibly be killed by the rampaging bear.

Moreover, the film gives these characters and their mother so much screen time, and clearly wants the audience to get emotionally invested in their survival, when just about everybody who came to see a movie called Cocaine Bear wasn't doing so for character development or feelings.

Cocaine Bear's biggest mistake was playing things far too safe and spending way too much of its runtime trying to endear us to the human characters - especially these two kids.
