7. Black Sea
Tomatometer rating: 82%Gross: $1,171,559 Apparently, Jude Law isn't the box office draw he once was - since his shift from conventional star to character actor, Law's films as lead (Dom Hemingway, 360, Repo Men) have largely underwhelmed. It's unfortunate for Law, as he's doing some of his best ever work right now, and just as unfortunate for the recent gem that sadly got away from most cinema-goers. That would be Black Sea, a submarine thriller and return to form for Kevin Macdonald that came and went at the end of 2014 (the beginning of 2015 for US audiences). Macdonald takes a creaking old sub, stocks up it with character actors (Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Michael Smiley) and sends them looking for Nazi gold at the bottom of the ocean. Anyone who's ever wanted to see an underwater Treasure Of The Sierra Madre has their wish granted with Black Sea - it's a taut, muscular action movie about men prizing their greed above their humanity, in the confines of a rusty metal tub that looks set to crack any minute. If for nothing else, the film is worth a gander for Law's growling Scottish accent.
