8. The Double
Tomatometer rating: 82%Gross: $1.7 million Somehow, Richard Ayoade's relatively star-less Welsh coming-of-age drama Submarine did better business ($3.8 million) than his follow-up. That would be The Double, a more star-studded affair (Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O'Dowd, plus the returning Submarine cast) that got a much bigger promotional push than his first. The Double's lack of financial success could be down to the fact that even the jaunty trailers couldn't mask the film's highbrow aspirations: this was a dark comedy, based on a novel by Dostoyevsky, that looked like it'd taken inspiration in visual oppressiveness from Terry Gilliam's Brazil. It's still an excellently made and thought-provoking film, though, and in a twin role - a downbeat office worker and his cooler, rebellious doppelganger - Jesse Eisenberg is at the top of his game. It's not the funniest comedy ever made (it's best to think of it as a satire in the vein of Orson Welles's The Trial), but it is captivating and visually striking all the same.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
