4. Night Moves

Tomatometer rating: 85%Gross: $788,160 Another Jesse Eisenberg movie from 2014 that tanked, Night Moves probably didn't stand much chance on paper anyway. Despite the presence of stars Eisenberg, Peter Sarsgaard and Dakota Fanning, the film doesn't read like one made for big crowds - an environmental parable directed by indie auteur Kelly Reichardt, Night Moves instead looks more like an arthouse film that somehow managed to bag three movie stars. Anyone put off by the wrapping, though, will find something surprisingly audience-friendly inside (well, audience-friendly for Reichardt anyway). The film actually works as a gripping thriller at times, while Eisenberg, Sarsgaard and Fanning are all given something substantial to chew on as three activists plotting to blow up a dam. Eisenberg, as the lead, is given the most fascinating arc, and it's via him that Night Moves goes to some fairly dark places. This is indie cinema aiming for the mainstream without ever compromising its core values and style.
