2. Making Ripley's Daughter The Protagonist - Alien: Romulus

When Alien: Romulus was first announced and Cailee Spaeny was soon enough cast in the role of the new protagonist, speculation quickly ran rampant that the film, already confirmed to be set between Alien and Aliens, would revolve around Ellen Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) daughter Amanda.

Timeline-wise it made a ton of sense, especially as Ripley spent almost 60 years in hypersleep between the first two films, during which period Amanda grew into adulthood and, sadly, passed away before Ripley was awoken. And more than that, Hollywood loves nothing more than a legacy sequel that revolves around the offspring of the original hero, and Alien had the major advantage of Amanda Ripley already being a well-known canon character across movies, video games, and comics.

But for all of its faults - and there are certainly many - Alien: Romulus at least had the restraint to make Spaeny's new lead, Rain Carradine, an entirely new creation with no contrived links to existing franchise characters.

In a film that's jam-packed with so much ham-fisted fan service otherwise, it's genuinely surprising that the filmmakers didn't go the Amanda Ripley route.
