10 Recent Movies That Blew Great Concepts

3. Bliss

Bliss is the latest film from the ambitious, ultra-talented sci-fi filmmaker Mike Cahill (Another Earth, I Origins), and stars Owen Wilson as a down-and-out middle-aged man who is befriended by a homeless woman (Salma Hayek) as his sanity spirals amid both psychosis and drug addiction.

Though the marketing sold Bliss as a loopy, Vanilla Sky-esque sci-fi thriller, it's far more of a drama about the perils of addiction than anything else, and so is sure to leave many feeling duped.

Wilson and Hayek certainly try to make it work, but the script lacks the emotional clarity to do either of them justice, and overall it just feels sloppy, unfocused, and self-consciously bewildering.

This is a textbook example of a movie that's confusing in all the wrong ways - it doesn't make you want to watch it again like The Matrix, but rather forget you thought the concept ever actually sounded interesting.
