Well, who saw this one coming? From the perspective of those expecting a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, many will have done so due to Hollywood's current climate and inevitable trajectory. But from the perspective of said live-action remake turning out to be pretty damn good, there were likely very few!
We've been down this road many times over the years, with Disney rather unsurprisingly focusing on turning their beloved and equally iconic animated films into unwanted and cheap cash-grabs to keep butts in seats - an approach Dreamworks had stayed away from.
So, when it was announced that Dreamworks would follow suit, the decision to do so was met with the familiar trepidation that Disney had become accustomed to. Make no mistake, though, Dean Deblois' How to Train Your Dragon should be the blueprint for how to make a live-action remake work, and, more importantly, worthwhile.
This doesn't want to be a tribute to its animated predecessor, but instead, a reinvention and revitalisation of a failing formula that was in desperate need of a justification for existing.
