10 Recent Movies That Totally Took You By Surprise
8. Wicked
Musicals are, more often than not, very tricky to try and replicate from stage to screen, especially when said musical happens to be one of the biggest, best, and most beloved of all time, and that's almost certainly the camp in which Wicked resides.
Any initial fears soon faded into obscurity after Wicked's release as the film proved to be a smash hit amongst audiences and critics alike. Although it wasn't exactly cheap to make, considering its near $150 million budget, you'd think it would have cost a hell of a lot more when looking at the sheer scale of the film.
Yet, Wicked proved a monumental success globally, so much so that it has become the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time, surpassing fellow fan favourites such as Phyllida Lloyd's Mamma Mia!. From a visual standpoint, Wicked is glorious and equally gorgeous to watch due to its incredible costumes and set design.
Additionally, this feels like a movie made for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who both clearly had a blast bringing these iconic characters to life. Wicked went on to receive a whole host of award recognition, most notably ten Academy Award nominations, including two wins.
This is all well and good, but what might be the most impressive and subsequently surprising aspect of Wicked is how many non-musical fans who initially wanted to hate the film ended up loving it!
