Rumours is a comedy-horror film starring the likes of Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, and Denis Ménochet as world leaders who, while meeting at the G7 to draft a statement on a non-specific worldwide crisis, get lost in the woods.

From here, the leaders must band together to face the untold horrors lurking in said woods.

At first glance, you might assume that Rumours is basically striking a similar tone to something like Adam McKay's Don't Look Up - a star-studded, intentionally unsubtle social satire that's broadly appealing to the masses.

But Rumours just isn't that movie at all. Co-directed by surrealist filmmaker Guy Maddin, Rumours is a decidedly weirder, less casual-skewing outing, enough that it almost feels like an elaborate prank.

To take celebrated, Oscar-winning actors like Blanchett and Alicia Vikander and throw them into a slow, talky movie where they stumble across bog people and a giant brain in the woods, is far from what many expected when they first heard the concept.

For anyone who expected Rumours to be Maddin's mainstream breakthrough, that clearly wasn't his intent at all, for better or worse.
