10 Recent Movies That Totally Trolled Audiences

In A Violent Nature
Shudder

To take one look at In a Violent Nature, you'd assume it to be a new straight-up slasher flick, given that the marketing focused largely on images of a hulking serial killer stalking hapless young victims.

But Chris Nash's film is probably best described as a deconstructionist slasher, given that for the bulk of the runtime we follow the killer, Johnny (Ry Barrett), while the human "protagonists" are shoved to the periphery until their time to die comes.

Nash's slow, dialogue-sparse filmmaking style has more in common with, say, a Kelly Richardt film than a Friday the 13th movie, as certainly caught many horror fans off-guard when they watched it.

This is best evidenced by the wildly polarised user reviews, with many criticising the movie for its sluggish pacing, resulting in a "boring" experience.

Love it or hate it, though, Nash absolutely committed to the bit, bamboozling gore-hounds by giving a prototypical slasher movie a provocative "arthouse" makeover.

It's safe to say that the in-development sequel probably won't be able to troll audiences quite so easily, as they'll now have a better idea of what they're in for.
