Poor Kenneth Branagh. With his second Poirot mystery, the actor-director gathered another all-star cast for more stylish drama and intrigue, and then he and Fox had to contend with the fact that most of them were embroiled in controversy.

Releasing three years after its initial 2019 slate, Death on the Nile was besieged by production delays brought on by the pandemic, and then almost entirely torpedoed by the horrific allegations facing its star, Armie Hammer.

Most of the discussion surrounding the film was focussed on its troubled cast - Hammer's woes are by far the most serious, but Letitia Wright and Russell Brand have also had their problems - putting Branagh's hopes for a sequel in jeopardy due to boycotts. The film barely broke even at the box office.

Luckily, controversy aside, the movie turned out pretty well, and Branagh's poised to keep his franchise alive with a follow-up. Hopefully this time he gets a less problematic cast.
