10 Recent Movies That Were Sent Out To Die
9. Eddington
While just about nobody was expecting Ari Aster's new pandemic-themed Western Eddington to be a box office smash, A24 really didn't even give it a fighting chance.
Despite an all-star cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone, the film's marketing was bafflingly low-key, enough that many likely weren't even aware that it released in the U.S. in mid-July.
After two weekends Eddington has barely cracked $8 million at the box office - a disastrous result considering its $25 million budget.
The only passable upside? It cost almost half of what Aster's previous film Beau Is Afraid did, which topped out at just $12.3 million worldwide.
Ultimately there was only limited interest in a movie that raked back over the pandemic five years after the fact - when many would seemingly prefer to forget all about it - and the wildly polarised reviews probably didn't help either.
Again, this was never going to post gangbusters figures, but A24 really didn't even try to make it feel like a major release from one of the most talented rising auteurs of the moment.
