10 Recent 'Reboots' Of 80s/90s Classics (That Were Nowhere Near As Good As Jurassic World)
10. Robocop (2014)
RottenTomatoes Score - 50% Compared To - Robocop (1987) - 83% Despite technically being a 'brainless' action film, the original 1987 version of Robocop is a surprisingly deep story with a number of themes that remain relevant today, such as corporate crime and the outsourcing of public services. Though visually, it hasn't aged particularly well, its portrayal of a desolate near-future Detroit was perfect for its gritty tale of redemption, which sees police officer Alex Murphy transformed into the titular cyborg after his murder. With great villainous turns from Kurtwood Smith (as street criminal Clarence Boddicker) and Ronny Cox (as corporate president Dick Jones), it remains a classic to this day. Largely because of the fact that many of its themes remain relevant today, there wasn't large-scale outrage about the announcement of a 2014 remake, particularly with Elite Squad director Jose Padilha and respected actors including Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton on board. The core story remains much the same, as the titular character (this time played by Joel Kinnamon) fights against an evil conglomerate, but the film was criticised for focusing too much on action at the expense of exploring the effects of what it presents and explores, particularly in an era where drones and other man-made war machines are becoming more and more prevalent.
