10 Recent Underrated Movies That Deserve A Second Chance
1. Annihilation
It’s hard to think of a movie in recent memory with a worse release than Annihilation. Coming out on the same day as what turned out to be a box office behemoth in Black Panther was a bad move, but that’s just for starters.
It came out in America & Canada in cinemas in February of 2018, then on Netflix in Europe, South America, Africa & Oceania in March, Chinese cinemas in April, then the rest of Asia on Netflix in May. It’s a bonkers release schedule which made it impossible to build momentum, and as a result Annihilation passed most people by.
Big stars alone don’t make a film great, but surely a feature starring Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Gina Rodriquez and Tessa Thompson is worth paying attention to? It’s a sci-fi psychological horror - a genre we don’t see nearly enough of - and was written and directed by Alex Garland, the man behind 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Ex Machina.
It sees Portman, Thompson and Rodriquez, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh, venture into a gorgeously dangerous jungle towards a mysterious ray of light. To explain it is to spoil it, but it’s well worth the journey.
