9. Ingrid Goes West

Ingrid Goes West positioned itself as having a modern day Juno vibe, and while that’s definitely a tone guaranteed to switch people off, it should have piqued the interests of so many more too. Unfortunately, despite electric chemistry on and off screen from leads Elizabeth Olsen and Aubrey Plaza, Ingrid Goes West sort of fizzled.

An indie film at heart in size, budget and ambition, the $3 million gross is nothing to be sniffed at. However, considering the name-brand recognition from stars of The Avengers and Parks & Recreation, plus the underlying quality of the film, it had more potential to breakout into a mainstream hit.

Sadly, it was not to be, but there’s still time for it to be transformed into a cult classic in the next couple of years.

The relatively simple plot sees Olsen play Instagram influencer Taylor, with Plaza as the titular Ingrid, her stalker. Ingrid quickly manages to move into Taylor’s inner circle, with the movie a perfect blend of darkness and humour. It’s a role so tailor made for Plaza you have to suspect it was written for her.

The movie explores the differences between virtual likes and actually liking someone in a clever, unique way.
