10 Recent Underrated Movies That Deserve A Second Chance

8. The Edge Of Seventeen

A classic case of a poor title killing a film before it ever had a chance, The Edge Of Seventeen sounds like a fairly solid teen movie, and star Hailee Steinfeld was just on the cusp of stardom having made her name in True Grit a few years before.

If it released today, post Spider-Verse, Bumblebee and Steinfeld’s first EP, a better title might have seen it fare slightly better. It was much cleverer, and more importantly much funnier, than it appeared upon its 2016 release.

The plot does sound like your middle-of-the-road teen comedy: it focuses on Nadine (Steinfeld) struggling with the fact her best friend is dating her older brother. That’s kinda it.

Of course, even great movies sound terrible if you reduce them down to a single sentence. Nine blokes go looking for a magical ring is basically The Lord Of The Rings, after all.

Now, The Edge Of Seventeen is not the cinematic equal of The Lord Of The Rings. By the same token though, it’s not down with A Cinderella Story or LOL either. It’s closer to Easy A: a movie which fully understands the tropes it’s playing to, and manages to make them feel fresh.
