10 Recent Underrated Movies That Deserve A Second Chance

4. A Simple Favour

Annihilation Natalie Portman
Lionsgate

A Simple Favour marks the first genuinely successful film here, grossing $97 million off just a $20 million budget. However, it feels as though the marketing department had never even watched this film, and as a result, those who haven't seen it will dismiss as a typical light and fluffy chick flick. Worse, those who went to see it expecting such a film were left disappointed by what they got, so the ratings for this are all over the place.

In short, while it did well, you might think it's a completely different film, and therefore deserves a second chance.

It would be fair enough to have seen the leads of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively and assumed it was the sort of silly comedy those two have built their careers on. Several of the trailers emphasised the comedy angle too, feeling this would be a key selling point. With an almost fivefold profit, you'd have to say they were right, but it still felt like they did a disservice to the film as a whole.

Hints of the dark underbelly, mystery of the missing persons plot and genre bending of A Simple Favour were missing completely, despite being the film's most interesting parts.
