2007's big-budget post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend was a massive box office success, grossing almost $600 million against a $150 million budget, and though Will Smith's protagonist Robert Neville died at the end, there were immediate talks for some sort of a continuation.

By the next year, director Francis Lawrence had settled upon a prequel that would allow Smith to return, but by 2011, he changed his tune and stated that it probably wouldn't ever get made.

Warner Bros. then attempted to get a reboot going to no avail, but back in March the studio confirmed that a direct sequel to the original was now in development, with Smith somehow set to reprise his role while starring opposite Michael B. Jordan (who will also produce).

It remains to be seen whether or not I Am Legend 2 will adopt the original's alternate ending where Neville survives, or simply feature Smith in flashbacks, but there's a good chance we'll never find out given the immense difficulty that Warner Bros. has had developing a follow-up.

Plus, with Smith's infamous Oscar slap incident happening mere weeks after the movie's announcement, in turn making him temporarily radioactive in the industry, it may not be a project considered a priority for an increasingly risk-averse Warner Bros keen to shift a massive pile of debt.
