4. The Wild One Banned For "Encouraging Delinquency"

Though Laslo Benedek's classic Marlon Brando-drama was released in the US in 1953, it remained banned in the UK until 1967 due to the ludicrous BBFC decision that it encouraged anti-social behaviour and would only enhance the then-pervasive problem of youth delinquency and a perceived lack of authority. Though the concerns were legitimate given the time period - a post-war era in which youngsters were rebelling against their elders like never before - it is absurdly reactionary to ban a film under the pretence that it might inspire antisocial behaviour, otherwise we'd have to ban pretty much every "yoof" film released in cinemas these days, though actually, that doesn't sound like such a terrible idea... While today the film seems incredibly tame - and is furnished with a PG certificate - it's just difficult to imagine the BBFC daring to try and ban a film these days on the basis that it might promote problematic social behaviour. Good luck with that...
