10 Ridiculous International Movie Posters

5. Black Panther (China)

Shame Hungary Poster
Marvel Studios

Another attempt by Walt Disney to land a major Western blockbuster in China, and another poster which, so it seems, shamelessly attempts to de-emphasise a black character.

Except it's pretty friggin' hard to de-emphasise Black Panther's non-white cast members, given the 2018 Marvel hit made history as the first megabudget superhero film with a predominantly black cast. The John Boyega Star Wars vanishing act was off the table, so instead Chadwick Boseman's eponymous hero saw his apparently troublesome black face entirely masked over with, well, a mask.

Again, no particular reason was proffered for the inexplicable change. Whatever it was, the alteration didn't work: though Black Panther became the highest grossing Marvel movie to date in North America, it dramatically tailed off in the Chinese market, eventually being booted from the top of the box office by Tomb Raider.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
