6. Zendaya Is Secretly Playing Mary Jane (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

The Rumour: As soon as singer Zendaya was cast in the new Spider-Man movie, fans began to suspect that she was set to play a race-swapped version of Mary Jane Watson.

Why It Shouldn't Happen: Mary Jane has been thoroughly played out thanks to the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, so it'd be nice to give the character an extended break and Peter Parker another young lady to romance, if the movie even really needs a love story at all (which apparently it does).

How Likely Is It?: Officially, Zendaya's character is called Michelle, and the fact that she snarkily refers to Peter and his pal Ned Leeds as "losers" in the first trailer makes it pretty unlikely she is, in fact, playing Mary Jane. Still, it wouldn't be above Marvel to be trolling fans by totally reinventing the character here, in much the same way that Flash Thompson is now a pint-sized rich kid.

Still, it seems probable that Spider-Man's most iconic romance is sitting this one out. 3/10
