10 Most Ridiculous Rom-Com Premises In Cinema History

6. The Proposal €“ Sandra Bullock Forces Underling Into Marriage

The Proposal is lucky to be blessed with two sizzling lead actors, because it's another bureaucratically ridiculous rom-com in the same vein as What Happens in Vegas. High-flying publishing agent Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is notified that her visa has expired (she's Canadian), and that she's likely going to be deported. To save her hide, she convinces her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her, the catch being that they will have to pose convincingly as a couple while U.S. immigration investigates them, or Margaret will be deported and Andrew may go to jail. And so the ruse begins, where the pair meet Andrew's family €“ who are bemused that the boss he's spent years moaning about is now his partner €“ and then later on that they're engaged. It's awkward and pretty hilarious to say the least, largely thanks to Reynolds and Bullock's totally game attitudes to what is a very cartoonish romance. We all know how it's going to end, with the two realising they actually do have feelings for each other, but thankfully it's largely all about the car-crash embarrassment of the lie, which eventually is no longer a lie.
