10 Ridiculous Stories Behind 2019 Movies
2. Vomit Queue - Knives Out
Knives Out (light spoilers ahead) was one of the biggest surprises of the year, seemingly coming out of nowhere to critical acclaim and a decent box office haul. It's take on the whodunit murder mystery and all the tropes that accompany it was refreshing to many, much to director Rian Johnson's credit.
A story element that helped achieve this was definitely one of the characters' relationship to vomiting, and so it was important that this was done exactly right. However, few would imagine the lengths they actually went to ensure that. According to star Ana de Armas, everyone on set (including Johnson and fellow cast member Chris Evans) went outside on the grass and tried projecting baby food with water of different consistencies to see which would go the farthest so it can be hooked up to a mechanism for use.
In a crucial scene where it was needed, de Armas was given the trigger and pulled it at different times in each take to maintain the element of surprise for the intended target, reminiscent of Hans Gruber's fall in Die Hard. Truly, some directors go to nauseating steps to ensure that the audience has the best possible experience.
