10 Ridiculous Stories Behind 2019 Movies
3. Tree Argument - Hellboy
Promising so much but delivering so little, Hellboy was easily one of the biggest disappointments of 2019. And according to a report from The Wrap, it's easy to see why, possibly staking a claim for one of the most turbulent shoots in recent cinematic history.
Ultimately, the issues were down to clashes between director Neil Marshall and producers on set, particularly Lloyd Levin. This led to many extraordinary instances such as constant script re-writing on location, Levin giving actors different directions from Marshall, star David Harbour walking off set and the replacement of cinematographer Sam McCurdy, a frequent collaborator of Marshall's (previous team-ups include Blackwater, still one of Game of Thrones' best episodes).
However, the most ridiculous clash described was about the design of a tree, which ends up being a focal point of the film. Though Marshall strongly desired it to be asymmetric so it can look more realistic, this was overriden by Levin, instead demanding a symmetrical design. During post-production, the tree then somehow reverted back to being asymmetric. This may seem laughably inconsequential, but it is a symptom of the fundamental problems that plagued Hellboy's production, and that toxicity undoubtedly played a major part in its downfall.
