10 Ridiculous Times Horror Movie Franchises Jumped The Shark

5. [REC] - No More Found Footage

The original [REC] is still considered to be one of the greatest found footage movies of all time. Released in 2007 before the first person format became extremely cliche, the film brilliantly gave the zombie genre new life by putting us in the perspective of its lead character. Plus, at a time when zombie movies were becoming more and more comedic, here was one that was actually terrifying.

[REC] 2 was able to recapture that, and so the franchise was moving along pretty smoothly. Then [REC] 3 decided to screw everything up and change the series into something completely different. For one, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the movie is much lighter in tone than before, trying to add in some comedy for some stupid reason. In one scene, a character puts on knight's armor to fight the zombie horde, and in in general most of the deaths are played for laughs. Moments like these would fit a film like Zombieland, but not a sequel to one of the scariest movies ever.

Beyond all that, though, one decision just ruined the whole thing. After 20 minutes, the film just decides to stop being found footage. Out of nowhere, they just drop the entire thing that made the series memorable. Why even call it [REC] anymore? Suddenly, it's just another boring zombie movie.
