Directed by Friday helmer F Gary Gray, the brilliant director behind Straight Outta Compton and Fate of the Furious whose many great films are mysteriously consistently underrated (wonder why), 2003's The Italian Job remake by all accounts might actually be better than the original.

Strong words, sure, so let's look at the cast. Cult favourites Seth Green and Mos Def fill in small roles, whilst the main players are a who's who of rising stars who went on to blockbuster success: Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham...

Then the story. Adding a revenge motivation to deepen the story's impact means the heist has higher stakes but the banter and action sequences are as dynamic and fun as ever.

The result is a potent piece of pure escapism which outclasses its inspiration at every swift turn to become a modern instant classic.

Also, they improved on that interminable ending.
