If there's one thing that paranormal investigator supreme/ real-life maybe-total-grifter Ed Warren can do, it's hunt down and exorcise demons and spirits.

But if there's a second thing that The Conjuring franchise's hero (played to perfection by Patrick Wilson) is great at, it's painting.

Oddly.

At least, that's the impression the audience gets from 2016's The Conjuring 2, a chilling instalment in this blockbuster horror franchise. Early on in this sequel the viewer is introduced to the film’s primary villain and spin-off monster, creepy demonic nun Valak, via a painting our hero Ed is doing of her.

It's inspired by a vision he had of the nasty old crone, and the resultant painting is one of the creepiest portraits in horror movie history.

Dead-eyed and scowling, the nun looks like an extra from a Marilyn Manson video shoot even before the painting grabs its own sides and takes a run at Ed's wife Lorraine near the film's close. Easily one of the scariest images listed here, this portrait of Valak is both testament to Ed's apparent artistic prowess and proof that he can't pick a portrait subject to save his life.
