10 Scariest Movies Made By Disney

1. The Black Cauldron (1985)

Have you ever heard of Disney’s dark ages? Well, this film is the ultimate representation of it. The Black Cauldron is described as “the film Disney tried to bury” because it was so far removed from anything the studios had done before. No songs, no bright colours, no real sense of joy – it is purely a fantasy film which involves so much dark magic and scary beings.

Due to its heavy content, it was never released to video until thirteen years later. It was also the first Disney animated theatrical movie to receive a PG rating. And it may come as no surprise that Tim Burton worked on production before becoming a filmmaker in his own right.

It’s hard to pinpoint just one horrifying moment of the movie. John Hurt gives a terrific performance as the ruthless Horned King. Even before we see the king in the flesh, just the setting of his castle leaves you feeling on edge. He is a terrifying antagonist, who will stop at nothing to acquire the Black cauldron.

The ultimate part which leaves us all watching from behind a cushion is when he summons the army of the dead – it’s a green, blurry horror coming to life on screen and it makes us wonder how something like this could ever make it into a supposed children’s movie.

It’s a grim picture from start to finish and whilst most mega-Disney fans would turn their nose up at The Black Cauldron, it is a good viewing for those who like the dark fantasy genre.
