10 Scariest Natural Disaster Movies You Need To See
7. Earthquake
In this all-star drama, the citizens of Los Angeles are forced into a frenzy after the city is hit with... well, it's there in the title.
Earthquake has all the iconic shots moviegoers have come to expect, including falling buildings, collapsing bridges, and houses cracking in half. But what really sells these moments isn't the destruction itself, but the stunt team.
Rather than relying on dummies, the studio hired over a hundred stunt performers to make the scenes of people falling to their doom look more authentic.
Despite being released in the '70s, many of the special effects stand the test of time. For example, the shots of the skyscrapers crumbling look so realistic, it's hard to believe it was performed without CGI, and even though the rubble is composed of polystyrene, the actors are convincing at portraying they're about to be flattened like a pancake.
Also, Earthquake makes everything look like a deathtrap. Whether the characters are out in the open, in their house, or hiding underground, they always seem moments away from being crushed, electrocuted, or swallowed up by the earth itself.
