10 Scariest Scenes In "True Story" Films

5. Zodiac Made Drew Carey's Brother Your Worst Nightmare

The Phantom Killer in The Town That Dreaded Sundown
Warner Bros.

Audiences were fairly mixed at David Fincher's meticulous, almost journalistic, adaptation of Robert Graysmith's hunt to capture the ever-elusive Zodiac Killer. While some hailed it as the best film of the year (no easy feat considering its competition was No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood), others were somewhat less than satisfied with its conclusions.

While Graysmith, Fincher and screenwriter James Vanderbilt seem pretty set in their thesis that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac, a documentary on the DVD's extended cut reveals another, almost equally convincing theory regarding a suspect not even mentioned in the film.

Nevertheless, Fincher and company couldn't have found an actor more suitable to drop the mic when necessary. John Carrol Lynch was best known at the time for playing Drew Carey's cross-dressing brother on the comedian's hit Cleveland-based sitcom. That he's since turned up on American Horror Story as John Wayne Gacy is not likely a coincidence.

For the moment his aviator shoes set themselves in front of Detective Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) and Sgt. Jack Mulanax (Elias Koteas), they have their man. With a room full of character actors of that pedigree, you know you have to bring something to the table. No one knew just how bone-chilling the line, "I'm not the Zodiac, and even if I were, I wouldn't tell you," could be.
