10 Scariest Short Horror Films You've Probably Never Seen
6. The Maiden (2016)
Helmed by Michael Chaves - who'd go on to direct The Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun II - The Maiden is a highly polished slice of supernatural horror which demonstrated Chaves' chops in the horror genre.
This short sees real estate agent Lucy (Alia Raelyn) attempt to make a decrepit old manor look presentable for a potential buyer. While cleaning, she realises that the house is already home to a malevolent occupant.
From the eerie cold open, it's clear that something is deeply wrong with the place before Lucy even sets foot in the decaying building. The moment she does, though, the terror only escalates as her encounters with the vicious spirit become more violent.
Whether it's a ghostly face appearing when a camera flashes, or a silhouette lurking in the background, The Maiden has a disquieting atmosphere that worms its way under the audience's skin long before events reach their unnerving conclusion.
Although this spirit's presence is more than enough to make for a chilling outing - with a close-up meeting being this film's most nightmarish moment - the ghost's ambiguous motivations and backstory only serve to make her appearance even more frightening.
