It's time now to return to the wacky and grotesque world of David Cronenberg, with a movie that many consider his magnum opus. It's easy to understand why Videodrome has such a massive place in the history of cinema, as the title was utterly ahead of its time, presented some horrifying ideas, and still holds up thanks to the lavish practical effects.
Video rome tells an extraordinary tale about a programmer at a TV station named Max Renn - played by James Woods. He is provided with a bizarre and violent programme called Videodrome. Soon chaos erupts as he begins to hallucinate and discover the truth behind the show.
Like Existenz, this movie excels at painting a picture of the symbiotic relationship between humans and technology but turns it into a form of body horror. However, Videodrome takes the concept one step further thanks to its perversion of technology.
TVs, organs, skin, technology, it's all here, and it's all terrifying. Seeing images like a television breathing and stretching its skin, a pulsating videotape being inserted into a torso and much more makes the film a disgusting flick, that you somehow can't look away from.
