10 Sci-Fi Movie Deaths That No One Saw Coming
1. Beau—A Quiet Place
Released in 2018, it’s fair to say that Office star John Krasinski’s unrelenting horror sci-fi A Quiet Place is far from what fans of Jim Halpert expected the actor to direct. A post-apocalyptic thriller, the film sees Krasinski star as a dad attempting to raise three kids in a desolate future where sound-sensitive monsters have offed most of the population.
It’s a logically dicey premise, so the best route for the director to take is to establish a tone so uncompromisingly brutal that the audience doesn’t have time to think too much.
And that’s exactly what this film’s first devastating death does, as a pre-credits kill lowers that number of kids being raised to two.
The opening death of the family’s youngest son, dispatched offscreen after accidentally activating a loud toy, instantly earned itself a place in sci-fi film infamy, and it’s so memorably tragic that many repeat viewers forget just how sudden and unexpected it is on first viewing.
An out of nowhere shock, this scene cements the fact that the filmmakers aren’t messing around, and what follows is an entire movie of unbearable, edge-of-your-seat tension.
