You all saw this one coming.

Breaking into the Starkiller base after The First Order utilised it in the destruction of The New Republic, Han and company are tasked with locating and destroying the base's cooling systems. While planting explosives, their plan appears to go off without a hitch - until they are confronted by Kylo Ren, who seems to have something of a score to settle with his smuggler father.

Exchanging some harsh words and tender father-son moments, it eventually looks as if Ren is ready to give up his evil ways and step back over to the light. With his lightsaber in Han's grasp, there is a grain of unexpected joy in a franchise known for its dark and brooding twist. And then, of course, comes the dark and brooding twist.

Finding his resolve in The Sith and firming up on his evil beliefs, Ren has another last minute change of heart, activating the lightsaber that just so happens to be pointing straight through Han's chest.

On release this was a total curveball, killing off one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise - in the first of a new trilogy no less. Well played, Star Wars. Well played.
