10 Sci-Fi Movies That Pissed Audiences Off In The Final Scene

3. The Mist

The Mist Ending Thomas Jane
MGM

Unlike basically every other entry on this list, the ending to Frank Darabont's The Mist basically intended to piss audiences off, or at least leave them with incredibly conflicted feelings about what they just watched.

The sci-fi horror cult classic ends with David Drayton (Thomas Jane) entering a suicide pact with his fellow survivors after losing all hope for humanity to prevail over the interdimensional monsters invading Earth.

David shoots all the other survivors with his gun, including his own blissfully ignorant son Billy (Nathan Gamble), only to have no bullets left for himself.

And so he instead walks out into the mist, waiting to be devoured by the incoming monsters, only for an Army tank to roll out of the mist, as it's revealed that they've finally turned the tables on the creatures and are starting to get the invasion under control.

Basically, David just killed a bunch of people - again, including his son - for no good reason, given that they all would've been saved if they'd waited two minutes longer.

It's an ending so miserable it almost borders on trolling, and while quite brilliant in its own way, you can't really blame general audiences for being left sour by it.
