Poor Don Coscarelli can’t catch a break! First with Phantasm’s End, and again here with Bubba Nosferatu And The Curse Of The She Vampires, a proposed sequel to his cult hit Bubba Ho-Tep.

Starting out as an end credit joke in the first film, the idea inched toward reality when Bubba Ho-Tep garnered instant cult classic status upon release. This left Coscarelli in a bind, how could he make a sequel out of this? After all, Elvis (Bruce Campbell) died at the end of the film.

Well, make the movie a prequel, of course!

Billing itself as a “lost” Elvis film, Bubba Nosferatu would have told the tale of Elvis fighting off a group of vampires down in Louisiana. Not only was Campbell interested in returning as Elvis/Sebastian Haff, but acclaimed actor Paul Giamatti, a big fan of Coscarelli, was to play the part of Elvis’ manager Colonel Parker.

Everything was going perfectly, with fan interest off the charts and both Giamatti and Coscarelli stating in interviews that the screenplay was “really great”. But a spanner was soon thrown into the works as Campbell dropped out, stating the script was an unsatisfactory continuation of the character he helped create.

While every so often news would float out to give fans hope such as actor Ron Perlman expressing interest in taking over the role of Elvis, nothing ever came of this and as of now, the project is officially dead.

Or at least in movie form, it is. A comic book titled Bubba Ho-Tep And The Cosmic Bloodsuckers written by Joe R. Lansdale (the man who penned the original story Bubba Ho-Tep), is being released in 2018 by IDW Publishing.
