10 Scumbag Horror Movie Protagonists We STILL Rooted For

8. Esther - Orphan: First Kill

It seemed like a basically impossible task for Orphan prequel First Kill to make us root for its villain protagonist Esther aka Leena (Isabelle Fuhrman), who in the first film was revealed to be a serial killer posing as a young girl, aided by a hormone disorder which makes her resemble a child.

But for all of its issues, First Kill did have one brilliantly devious gambit up its sleeve, by revealing that there was another killer in Leena's midst.

Leena spends the movie posing as Esther, the missing child of the Albright family, only for it to eventually be revealed that the real Esther actually died four years earlier during an argument with her older brother Gunnar (Matthew Finlan), which mother Tricia (Julia Stiles) then covered up without her husband's knowledge.

And so, the seemingly affable Tricia reveals herself to be a cunning femme fatale who poses a genuine threat to Leena, enough that one actively looks forward to seeing her die by Leena's hand at film's end, as she does.

It doesn't cancel out every horrible thing Leena has done throughout both movies, but it sure was fun to see her take out the trash regardless.
