Return To Oz was the extremely belated sequel to The Wizard Of Oz, coming a full 46 years later. It has developed a small cult following based on its dark tone and overall creepiness, but in general it's been pretty much forgotten. The story has a depressed Dorothy returning to Oz, only to finds its been destroyed by an evil witch. Even the yellow brick road has been torn up! Dorothy teams up with a new group of friends to return Oz to its former glory. When the film came out there was a backlash against its surprisingly grim atmosphere, with several scenes such as a room full of screaming decapitated heads being cited as too intense for young children. And there are no musical numbers to lighten the mood. But it does earn some points for attempting to do something completely different from the original, and it has some rich imagery, creative set design and setpieces. It even received an Oscar nod for best visual effects. But those who enjoyed the upbeat, Technicolor wonders of The Wizard Of Oz may have a hard time dealing with Return To Ozs seriously depressed vibe.
