10 Seriously Ridiculous Instances Of Movie Product Placement

2. The Big Money - Forrest Gump (1994)

Gump While regular dumb ass Forrest Gump is at College, he gets to go to the White House to meet President Kennedy. While there, he takes advantage of the free food and drink as he stupidly drinks seven Dr. Peppers in a row - idiot. He meets the President who asks him how he feels to be an All American. He replies, "I got to pee." A great scene that always gets the laughs but in the book, written by Winston Groom, Forrest drinks two Slurpees instead of Dr. Pepper. Why not get the rights to a cheaper drink owned by parent company 'ICEE' than go for the biggest corporation in the world; 'Coca Cola'? It defies any real sense as drinking Slurpees is probably a little funnier anyway, and in keeping with the nature of Forrest. It would seem Zemeckis is a sucker for the big boys with this one. Again, did Zemeckis feel this would add any artistic merit to the story? Make it funnier? More fitting? The reasons seem to be unknown (the DVDs Commentary track and making of's don't go into any detail) yet one thing is for sure; Marketing for the film would have had to dig a lot deeper into their pockets for a joke that gets about 10 seconds of screen time.
