It's an unwritten rule that any list of this nature should include a movie by Lars Von Trier. The Danish filmmaker has a highly praised filmography that also contains some remarkably divisive movies, depending on what your tolerance levels are. His most recent venture, The House That Jack Built, is one such movie. However, it's his 2009 movie Antichrist that warrants a spot on this list.
Anchored by ridiculously good performances from Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Antichrist follows a couple spending time at their cabin in the woods hoping to repair a broken marriage and heal their grief. On the face of it, that sounds like a dark drama. In reality, this psychological horror is an exercise in escalating pain and disturbing insanity.
As the couples relationship goes from bad to worse, Charlotte Gainsbourg's character goes from suffering atypical grief to delivering searing pain on not only her husband but herself. Bloody ejaculations, genital mutilation, and a talking disembowelled fox, are just some of the madness inducing imagery you'll be exhibited with this artistic slice of cinema.
