10 Signs DC Will Dominate Marvel At The Box Office (Eventually)
5. DC Is Already Breaking Marvel's Records
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy pulled off an incredible feat when it transformed C-list comic book characters into bona fide box office stars.
Before the film’s release, some pundits where skeptical about the property’s box office potential until a series of jaw-dropping trailers sold audiences on the concept. Guardians went on to obliterate the August opening weekend record in a feat that didn’t seem likely to be repeated for a long time - that is until a plucky group of underdog’s called the Suicide Squad came along an absolutely annihilated Guardian’s records.
This is just the first in a string of inevitable DC box office victories. It’s true that Suicide Squad benefited from having Batman and the Joker in its marketing material, which could explain its buffo opening weekend tally, but that still doesn’t account for the film’s strong box office legs.
Suicide Squad earned a colossal $720 million worldwide, which is quite impressive given its critical panning. After just three films, the DCEU has surpassed an achievement it took Marvel ten films to produce: taking minor characters and elevating them into box office superstars. As the franchise progresses expect even more Marvel records to bite the dust.
