The story of cinema’s most iconic family will finally be concluding this fall. Star Wars Episode 9 will be hitting cinemas in December and with it, the Skywalker saga delivers its long, long awaited encore. As pre-sales figures surpass even Avengers Endgame, the hype train is at warp speed, and the excitement so thick you can cut it with a lightsaber.

However, the more we delve into the stream of trailers, TV spots and other juicy bits of information, the more it all starts to ring a bell... a magical bell. It has been eight years since we saw Harry Potter cast his last Expelliarmus, but his influence has clearly spread far and wide. All the way to a galaxy far, far away.

Be it spiritually connected characters or an evil man’s supposed quest for immortality, a lot of the challenges facing Rey and co. in the heavily anticipated finale are shaping up to reflect things Harry and his friends went through during their own crusade against the dark side.

The droids are one of most recognizable, and memorable members of the Star Wars universe. Which is why it yanked on a lot of heartstrings when one of the trailers showed C-3PO appearing to say his final goodbyes. The speculation and theories surrounding this moment have been rampant and predictably wild, including a suggestion that he might actually be undergoing a complete reset to recover his memory files deleted in Revenge of the Sith.

But for now, the easiest interpretation is that the fan-favorite galactic translator has reached the end of his road. This draws comparisons with another famous message bearer who lost his life in the final installment of a franchise. In Death Hallows, or Deathly Hallows Part 1 for the movies, Harry’s snowy white owl and first real companion, Hedwig, throws himself into the line of fire to protect his master.

The scene was utterly heartbreaking and perfectly captured J.K. Rowling’s depictions of true, honest friendship and the sacrifice needed for standing up against evil. If this is indeed C-3PO’s fate in Rise of Skywalker, then rest assure the outpouring of emotion will be just as overwhelming.
