The Avenger movies were always designed to be the major events of the Marvel universe; where all the heroes unite to take on threats too powerful for them to handle alone. The first Avengers managed to combine them together whilst giving everyone aside from Hawkeye something to do. As Age Of Ultron introduced yet more characters everyone found themselves struggling for screentime, and the plot became hopelessly muddled. There was the subplot with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, the introduction of The Vision, the farm scene with Hawkeyes family, the cave scene with Thor and so on. There was simply too much happening that meant the movie couldnt focus on any one plotline for long, which made it feel messy. Marvel also felt the need to set up the plots for Thor: Ragnarock, Captain America: Civil War, Black panther and the next Avengers movie, which further took away from focusing on the story at hand. If they had trimmed some of the fat off the story, removed a couple of useless characters (why is Andy Serkis in this movie again?) and made Ultron feel like more of a serious treat then Age Of Ultron would have been much stronger for it.
