10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching The Nun

5. Father Burke's Many Crossword Clues

One of the recurring features of The Nun is Father Burke's love of crossword puzzles. He's seen regularly updating his newspaper on the way to Saint Cartha's monastery and during the first night, with Sister Irene chipping in with the 'Deliveries' answer that stumps the priest initially.

Though the continuity gets a little iffy over the clues Burke has solved each time the puzzle is shown, each and every clue that is put on screen ends up serving as a subtle nod from the filmmakers. The 'Deliveries' answer is obviously a play on the classic role of God in delivering the world from the evil brought about from demons such as Valak, as well as being a nod to the deliveries room being the place the trio of heroes first travel to when they visit the grounds.

The word 'Anointer' is shown, foreshadowing Father Burke's role in anointing Irene as a Nun later on the movie and the way in which the blood of the Holy Spirit protects her from Valak's possession during the finale, and the word 'Novice' is present to describe the state of Irene heading into the movie.
