10 Spine-Chilling Winter Horror Movies
6. 30 Days Of Night (2007)
Set in the subzero temperatures of Barrow, Alaska where polar nights plunge the region into prolonged periods of darkness, the bleak winter setting proved to be the ideal backdrop for a vampire film in David Slade's 30 Days Of Night.
A cinematic adaptation of the comic miniseries of the same name (which was co-written by original author Steve Niles), the flick sees the Alaskan town become home to a group of bloodthirsty bloodsuckers led by the vicious Marlow (Danny Huston). However, they're not here for some scenic relaxation; they plan to use the sunless winter as an opportunity to feast on the townsfolk.
Meanwhile, a group of survivors led by the town's sheriff (Josh Hartnett) must find a way to survive the carnage to see the sun rise again.
30 Days Of Night is a tense struggle for survival set against a hostile environment where escape is impossible. A sense of hopelessness hangs heavy in the air for the survivors as violence takes over the once quiet town.
Moreover, this film doesn't try to be anything more than what its premise suggests. The result is a tantalizingly bloody and surprisingly harrowing experience which fits nicely into the modern vampire genre.
