10 Spine-Chilling Winter Horror Movies

2. The Last Winter (2006)

Dead Snow
IFC Films

Starring Ron Perlman and Connie Britton, The Last Winter is another wintery horror that whisks audiences to the icy landscape of Alaska. This time, we follow a group of oil workers and environmental scientists working at a new oil drilling site.

Not long into the project, however, already frayed relationships are provoked further when strange events start to occur. Ghostly apparitions of animals are sighted in the snow, workers mysteriously go missing, and bodies start to pile up with no obvious cause of death.

Suspense and intrigue continue to grow as the workers realise the reality of their dire situation. And from herein, The Last Winter descends into a provocative and white-knuckled outing which taps into themes of environmentalism.

Led by a solid cast, the tension is palpable throughout. The snowy weather renders visibility an impossibility. It’s difficult to see what’s just out of the characters’ vision, and likewise it's impossible to know what could be looking back at them in the desolate wilderness.

While this flick’s low budget means that some of the effects haven’t held up too well over the years, The Last Winter is nevertheless an effective and poignant piece of horror.
